Trendy Geometric styling - go or no?

Jane Eyles-Bennett - Wednesday, March 09, 2016
Trendy Geometric styling - is it a Go or a No? Well, yes and no! I love playing around with trendy styles, but mostly only apply these to items that can be changed without too much drama or expense in the long run. Things like rugs, cushions and artwork are effective in doing this.

Incorporating geometric styling when furnishing your home isn’t hard and an up-to-date  translation of this 70’s trend can easily add a subtle dynamic edge to your space.

The key is to know which elements of your room will play the dominant role. While this is an easy trend to introduce into your home, it can be overwhelming if you go too far. A little goes a pretty long way when using a geometric style in your home.

Take the above image for example. Notice the neutral tones of the sofa and room colourings as a simple backdrop for the geometric themed cushions. It’s an understated nod to the geometrics of the 70's without turning the room into a shambles of shape and colour.

I love creating a neutral canvas (white/light/bright walls and neutral/natural floor finishes) and then layering patterns and colours on top of this. It might be a geometric pattern as I've mentioned above or it could be any number of trends that will come into fashion in years to come. The Scandi’ (Scandinavian) look is very fashionable these days too and often, geometric styling is mixed in with the light timbers and subtle textures of this style.

My guess is that most Geometric styling (in particular bold/colourful patterns) will be gone in the blink of an eye, so I definitely recommend NOT spending much on introducing this look into your home other than perhaps on a few cushions and some inexpensive accessories.

Remember that even the most subtle of hints of a style can leave an impression. And to be honest this really is where crisp, modern and fresh interior design comes into it's own.

Renovating your Home or Investment Property?

Home renovations are on the up and up - thanks to all the TV shows and other media outlets such as magazines and the internet.  But is it all that it's cracked up to be? TV makes it look so easy (renovate a kitchen in 2 days, transform your garden in 24 hours - we wish it was that simple!).

If your home or investment property is on the wrong side of 15-20 (years old) then you have a great opportunity to update and modernise it. But without experience on your side, things can (and often do) go really wrong - going over budget, not ending up with the style or look you'd imagined, problems with trades-people, time-frames blowing out - and the list goes on.

Hotspace can help

Hotspace offers one-on-one Exterior and Interior design advice to home owners and property investors.

Two-storey home renovations

Jane Eyles-Bennett - Monday, February 05, 2018

Renovating the facade of a two-storey home is entirely different to renovating the facade of a one-storey home. Use these top tips to make sure your two-storey home reno looks the best it possibly can…

Create a visual anchor
If you were to stand on the road and look along the driveway towards your house, you should be able to get an idea of how your property presents, and how much ‘visual anchoring’ it needs. To visually anchor a property is to give it a sense that the house is anchored in place. It is quite a subtle thing but when done well, it makes an enormous difference to the overall aesthetic of the entire property.
